FWP is seeking 8-12 individuals to serve on a working group to collaboratively identify the central issues and fundamental objectives that define effective elk management, and potential alternatives for elk archery regulations in support of effective management.

As we do for every legislative session, MWF monitors and provides a Sportspersons – MWF 2011 Legislative Watch Liston our Web-site. Understand that this list of legislative measures is as fluid as the Legislative Bill Draft Request List…it changes everyday. We encourage frequent visitation so that you may keep abreast of measures as they are presented to Legislators and Committees.
In addition, MWF has an email 2011 Capitol Watch – SPORTSMANS ADVOCATE NETWORK list-serve whereby we automatically send out the ‘Watch List’ to those that want to receive this information weekly and who will engage legislators on issues. The list and email will identify legislation that sportspersons need to pay attention to and or those that need ‘action’! Chronic wasting disease, or CWD, has not been found in Montana but evidence of the disease has been found within 50 miles of the Montana border.
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks officials are asking hunters, outfitters, landowners, and others to help keep a look out for CWD, a serious wildlife disease.
Hunters in eastern Montana are asked to donate heads from game harvested in portions of FWP Regions 6 and 7 as part of an FWP survey. Hunters can drop off heads at hunter check stations, FWP offices and at participating meat processors within the survey area.
A total of nearly 16,000 wild deer, elk and moose have been tested for CWD in Montana since 1998. Â While none have tested positive for the brain disease, it is important to remain vigilant and to detect the disease early should it enter the state. [Read more...]

Our “I Hunt, I Fish, I Vote†campaign emphasizes the concept that we all have a stake in the outcome of these decision-making processes and we should all be participants. In that vein, although it has been a while, we will regularly forward to you a running list of current Environmental Assessments like this one and other plans out for public comment broken down by agency. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is offering a new upland game bird habitat incentive program in 14 counties to encourage farmers and ranchers to enroll or renew federal Conservation Reserve Program contracts.
CRP, a voluntary program for farmers and ranchers, provides payments to establish resource conserving vegetative cover, such as tame or native grasses, wildlife plantings, trees, filterstrips, or streamside buffers on eligible agricultural lands. Acreage enrolled in CRP contributes to increased wildlife populations. This is the first time since 2006 that landowners have an opportunity to enroll in CRP. [Read more...]

Montana’s 2009 big game auction licenses drew a total of $293,500.
The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, at its 25th Annual Elk Camp & Hunting, Fishing and Outdoor Expo last week in Fort Worth, Texas, auctioned the 2009 Montana elk license for $16,000 and the moose license for $14,000.
Three auctions occurred in February at the 32nd Annual Wild Sheep Foundation Convention and the Western Hunting and Conservation Expo held in Salt Lake City.
The Wild Sheep Foundation auctioned the 2009 bighorn sheep auction license for $245,000, surpassing the 2008 auction by $50,000. The 2009 mountain goat license went for $10,000. The Mule Deer Foundation auctioned the 2009 mule deer license at the same event for $8,500.
At least 90 percent of all auction proceeds go to state management of the species, and the remainder go to the auctioning organization.
Almost a third of the bighorn rams that hunters have taken over the past three years in Montana qualify for the Boone and Crockett Club scoring system record book.
Hunters and conservationists interested in sheep say that makes Montana one of the best, if not the best place to hunt trophy bighorns.
