Pronghorn Hunting 101 Seminar in Ellicott

ELLICOTT, Colo. – Late-season pronghorn hunters looking for tips to improve their success are invited to a free seminar in Ellicott at the Community Center, 23355 CO Hwy 94, on Mon., Nov. 8 at 6 p.m.

The clinic is a way for pronghorn hunters to learn how and where to hunt pronghorn and improve their chances of successfully harvesting an animal.  Preparation for the hunt, pronghorn biology, hunting techniques and ethical hunting will be covered in the presentation.

“We will specifically focus on hunting in December,” said local District Wildlife Manager Jeromy Huntington.  “One thing we’ll cover will be the value of scouting, as pronghorn may not be in the same location as they were for the regular pronghorn seasons and they tend to be in larger groups.” [Read more...]

Elk Hunting 101 Class in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Elk hunters can learn how to improve their success rate by attending a free Colorado Division of Wildlife seminar Tue., Oct. 19 at 6:30 p.m. in Colorado Springs.

Public Land Road Closure Updates for Big Game Hunter

As rifle big game hunting seasons approach, the Colorado Division of Wildlife is alerting hunters to several possible issues they may encounter around the state. While the big game populations are thriving in the state and we anticipate a great fall hunting season, we want to make sure that hunters are prepared for what they might encounter in the field. DOW Researcher Presents Plans for Mule Deer Study

KREMMLING, Colo — The Colorado Division of Wildlife is preparing for a large study of buck mule deer survival in Middle Park to improve the Division’s ability to manage deer populations around the state through more informed modeling and harvest decisions.

The study plan will be explained by lead researcher Eric Bergman at a meeting of the Blue Valley Sportsman Club on Wednesday, Oct. 6. The public is invited to attend the meeting which will begin at 7 p.m. at the Blue Valley Sportsman Club.

Management of deer populations has become more complicated since the state responded to mule deer population declines by moving from over-the-counter deer licenses to limited licenses in 1999. [Read more...]

Protecting Your Pets From Coyotes

Wherever you live in Colorado, chances are you have seen foxes and coyotes near your home.  Although you might not have personally lost a pet to a wild animal, chances are you’ve heard of it happening in your community.

Foxes, coyotes, even bears and mountain lions, have shown great adaptability to live near humans – and that can spell trouble for pets that are allowed to roam free.

According to Rick Gardner, a District Wildlife Manager with the Colorado Division of Wildlife, “Dogs and cats stand little or no chance of survival when they have run-ins with coyotes, the most adaptable of the wild predators in Colorado.” [Read more...]

Online Hunter Education Course Offered in Durango

DURANGO, Colo. –The Colorado Division of Wildlife is offering an Online Hunter Education Course for Durango-area hunters who need to fulfill their hunter education requirements prior to the start of the 2010 hunting seasons.  Pre-registration is required and hunters have until Aug. 9 to sign up for online courses.

Online Hunter Education Courses provide the same information hunters receive in a traditional classroom setting, but are designed to cater to those individuals with unusual schedules or preference for computer-based learning formats. [Read more...]

Youth Shooting Sports Clinic in Teller CO

VICTOR, Colo. -  The Colorado Division of Wildlife, in cooperation with Cripple Creek Victor Gold Mining Company, will hold a youth shooting sports clinic July 31 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Youngsters interested in the sports of archery and shotgun shooting are invited to attend this one-day free event.  Registration is not necessary.

Activities include a shotgun target fun shoot, a 3-D archery shoot and instruction for both.  The DOW will also provide an electronic “laser-gun” hunting simulation that teaches youngsters about shot placement by generating actual hunting scenarios on a big-screen.

Boys and girls ages 7-16 are invited to attend, but must be accompanied by a parent.

Instructors from the DOW and local archery experts will help youngsters learn the finer points of shooting shotguns and bows.  The DOW will furnish the equipment.

Directions: From the town of Divide, drive south on Hwy 67 13.1 miles to CR 81 (road to Victor). Turn left on CR 81 and drive 4.1 miles to CR 82. Turn right on CR 82 and drive 1.2 miles to site.

DOW Website Offline Friday and Saturday
